Agroecology & land: the role of pastoralists to protect land and combat desertification

Let’s celebrate the IYRP, shedding light on the crucial role of rangelands covering 54% of the land’s surface of which 80% is managed under pastoral systems. In 2024, the UNCCD highlighted in the Global Land Outlook that "current global food systems are among the main sources of land degradation. Globally, they are responsible for 80% of deforestation, 70% of freshwater use, and are the largest cause of terrestrial biodiversity loss". When land is degraded or affected by drought, it loses its capacity to sustain plant and animal life and to fulfill its ecosystem functions. In contrast, agroecology is a sustainable solution to combat land degradation, as it promotes soil regeneration, diversified crop and livestock production, reduced dependency on external inputs, circular systems and economies, good governance and locally led solutions. In this webinar, co-organised by the Agroecology Coalition and the International Land Coalition, we will hear from pastoralists, crop farmers, civil society groups, UN bodies and policymakers dedicated to promote transitions towards agroecological food systems in order to ensure land-tenure security and sustainable land management to provide sustainable livelihoods for all.
