We are pleased to invite you to the launch event of the Landscapes of Pastoralist Transhumance: A Thematic Approach, developed under the ICOMOS World Heritage Transhumance Initiative (2024–2025).
Led by ICOMOS with the kind support of the State Tourism Agency of the Republic of Azerbaijan, this initiative aimed to raise awareness of the cultural and historical significance of pastoralist transhumance, its cultural, environmental and economic benefits, and the challenges it is facing globally.
This milestone marks the culmination of an extensive collaborative process involving an interdisciplinary pool of international experts, stakeholders, and partner organizations working across cultural heritage, agriculture and environment sectors.
From the kick-off meeting in September 2024 to the international expert conference held in Baku in June 2025, the project has explored the multiple dimensions of transhumance—as a living socio-ecological system and its material manifestations in landscapes. The Thematic Approach document gathers these rich reflections to support the identification, protection, and transmission of transhumance heritage. It also aligns with the objectives of the International Year of Rangelands and Pastoralists, contributing to increased global recognition of pastoralist transhumance.
The launch event will provide an opportunity to present to the global audience the collaborative journey and key messages of the Thematic Approach, discuss cross-sector perspectives, reflect on future directions and collaborations.
