Misconceptions about pastoralism in development abound — not least about the roles, knowledge and aspirations of pastoralist women. Join us to challenge these assumptions and explore new perspectives during the International Year of Rangelands and Pastoralists 2026!

The MOOC is an online participatory learning experience that explores how pastoralist livelihoods and production systems work, why mobility matters, and how pastoralists respond to environmental, economic and social change.
This edition will give particular attention to pastoralist women's experiences, knowledge and priorities, drawing on the conversations and initiatives of this eventful year — from the Global Gathering of Pastoralist Women (Mera+16) in Kathmandu to the Global Pastoralist Gathering and UNCCD COP17 in Mongolia, and CBD COP17 in Armenia.
What can you expect?
- 15 hours of free, self-paced online learning, with videos, readings, animations, quizzes and interactive materials.
- Experienced tutors supporting online discussions and exchanges with participants from around the world.
- Weekly live webinars with invited speakers, networking and discussion, plus additional sessions exploring gender, pastoralist knowledge and advocacy.
- A certificate of completion for those who complete all 15 modules.
Short of time? No problem! Explore the topics that interest you or join some of the webinars and discussions. There's no obligation to complete the course unless you'd like a certificate.
The course is open to pastoralists and their organisations, students, researchers, practitioners, policymakers and anyone interested in pastoralism. No prior specialist knowledge is required.
Registration closes: Tuesday 3 November 2026
