African Indigenous Pastoralists Gathering: Building a Common African Pastoralist Agenda in Preparation for IYRP

The African Indigenous Pastoralist Gathering in Nairobi (25–29 January) was co-organised by WAMIP member Association des Femmes Peules et Peuples Autochtones du Tchad, led by Hindou Ibrahim, WAMIP Regional Coordinator for Central Africa. WAMIP supported the participation of six members from our Youth Group. The Gathering focused on building a common African pastoralist agenda in preparation for upcoming global processes. Inputs were also shared by PINGOs Forum members who have faced forced eviction linked to the creation of a natural reserve, highlighting legal and policy challenges around pastoralist land rights. Dr. Florence Nherera Chokuda of the Eastern and Southern African Pastoralist Network emphasised challenges facing smallholders, including forced sedentarisation and limited access to finance. Venomukona Tjiseua of the Kaokoland Descendants Welfare Organisation contributed to discussions on land degradation and climate risks affecting pastoralist livelihoods and livestock management
