The role of livestock in agrifood systems and beyond: From discussion to action

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) is developing a comprehensive, science- and evidence-based global assessment of the contribution of livestock to food security, sustainable agrifood systems, nutrition and healthy diets, considering environmental, economic and social sustainability. The assessment consists of three component documents.

The first document, Contribution of terrestrial animal source food to healthy diets for improved nutrition and health outcomes. An evidence and policy overview on the state of knowledge and gaps, has already been published. The remaining two documents, Drivers of supply and demand of terrestrial animal source food. An evidence and policy overview on the state of knowledge and gaps; and Contribution of the livestock sector to food security and sustainable agrifood systems – benefits, constraints, synergies and trade-offs, will be published in 2026.

FAO is organizing webinars to introduce these latter publications ahead of their release and to set the scene for a broader discussion. The webinars explore how science- and evidence-based assessments inform programmatic and policy processes, while highlighting the roles and responsibilities of different stakeholders across the livestock sector.

This fourth webinar will feature a panel discussion with different stakeholders, bringing together different perspectives and showcasing examples of good practices.
